The Original David Grisman Quintet - Review

The Original David Grisman Quintet - Review

This album is so incredible it blows my mind.  The original line-up in The David Grisman Quintet consists of Darol Anger, Tony Rice, david Grisman, Bill Amatneek, and Todd Phillips.  These guys are all legends by now,  of course.  I can’t imagine what people thought when Grisman unleashed this new style of music known as “Dawg” music.   It’s easy to understand why Tony Rice quit playing with J.D. Crowe to join Grisman’s new band.

As stated on the album cover by Janice Bain, “They started calling them Dawg music, the weird tunes that were no longer bluegrass, not only jazz, tunes with a difference… the dawg’s own music.”

I found a copy of the original album in the closet at the recording studio I work at.   Amazing discovery!!! The record sounds much better than the cd release, which I loved until I heard this version.  You gain so much more perspective in the stereo image its unbelievable.  It actually feels like you’re sitting in the room with these amazing musicians, all extremely early in each of their amazing careers.   Listening to the record you can actually “feel” the sounds these instruments are speaking, rather than just hear a digital copy of the sound.  Much better than the cd version.

Notice the record company Kaleidoscope Records’ release number F-5… Awesome!

Music Idustry Exec: “Music 1.0 is dead.”

Consider the statements that were made today without controversy:

  • DRM on purchased music is dead
  • A utility pricing model or flat-rate fee for music might be the way to go
  • Ad-supported streaming music sites like iMeem are legitimate players
  • Indie music accounts for upwards of 30 percent of music sales
  • Napster isn’t losing $70 million per quarter (and is breaking even)
  • The music business is a bastion of creativity and experimentation

LAist: Man Stabs Movie Theater Patrons at Horror Movie

The movie was The Signal (the fascinating and gruesome trailer is below), a horror flick where most of the credited cast has names like “Random Body” and, err, “Random Body.” As mentioned in Friday’s LAist Weekend Movie Guide, it was a hit at Sundance 2007.

Well, imagine watching this scary movie in a near empty theater. That’s what was happening Sunday night around 7:30 p.m. at the Fullerton AMC Theater in Orange County. Then imagine, possibly during a stabbing scene (it’s a pretty intense horror movie, so the odds are there), that you are getting stabbed yourself. Yeah, that happened to two men in separate parts of the theater when another patron yielded a knife. One victim, was stabbed in the arm, but another had his lungs punctured, but officials say he is expected to survive.

Easy Ways to Improve Your Vision

#6. Move your computer screen to just below eye level. Your eyes will close slightly when you’re staring at the computer, minimizing fluid evaporation and the risk of dry eye syndrome, says John Sheppard, M.D., who directs the ophthalmology residency program at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia.

The Bluegrass Blog » Natalie MacMaster—as fit as a fiddle! - It’s YOUR blog!

With wavy blonde hair swinging as she moves, Natalie MacMaster continues to stun crowds with her feverish fiddling and mesmerizing step dancing. Fans in the Washington, DC area can see her perform on Wednesday, March 5 at the gorgeous, accoustically extraordinary Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda Maryland. (For tickets go to www.wpas.org) Now a mother, she’s still in great shape. “Looking even fitter than her fiddle, MacMaster pranced, twirled, bounced and swaggered about the Symphony Hall stage,” said Daniel Gewertz in the Boston Herald. “She is a master musician in constant motion, yes, but also a highly disciplined show woman who doesn’t make a single move that isn’t part of her theatrical plan … MacMaster still revels in girlish energy, yet her shows are the work of a mature, knowledgeable star. Folk mavens can focus on every fleet, phenomenal note her dazzling band makes; casual listeners can just let the fun and entertainment flow over themselves.”

Picture of Lunar Eclipse

APOD: 2008 February 22 - Eclipsed Moonlight
Moon watchers blessed with clear skies over the Americas, Europe, Africa and western Asia enjoyed a total lunar eclipse this week. Catching eclipsed moonlight, astroimager Jerry Lodriguss offers this view of the inspiring celestial event with the shadowed Moon accompanied by wandering planet Saturn at the left, and bright Regulus, alpha star of the constellation Leo, above. The engaging composite picture was made by combining a filtered, telephoto image of the Moon and surrounding starfield with a telescopic exposure. The combination dramatizes the reddened moonlight while clearly showing the variation of brightness and color in Earth’s not-so-dark shadow across the lunar surface.
