The Grand Ole Opry - April 11, 2009 - Nashville, TN
What a great night at the Opry! Guests include Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky thunder featuring Bryan Sutton (filling in for Cody Kilby who is on the road with the Travelin’ McCourys), Martina McBride, Vince Gill, Rhonda Vincent and the Rage, Jo Dee Messina, The Whites, Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives, and Aubrey Haney filling in for Hoot as the house fiddler. A special treat for me was seeing Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder play Wheel Hoss with dueling fiddles played by Andy Leftwich and Aubrey Haney… not to mention Bryan Sutton! For those of you not familiar, Bryan Sutton played the guitar on Ricky’s big comeback to acoustic bluegrass… Bluegrass Rules!

RIP Andy Holland aka “A Holland” from Scottsdale / Bowling Green, KY
I just learned of the passing of A Holland and I am deeply saddened by the news. Andy Holland died in his home on Feb. 20, 2009… his birthday. Andy was an incredibly passionate songwriter and musician. In 2003, Andy and I formed the short lived Mystery Mandolin Band. It always amazed me how Andy could capture an audience and I feel lucky to have shared the stage with such an amazing talent. His personality was HUGE! The above picture was taken by good friend Yonder Mike at the IBMA museum in Owensboro, KY on July 4, 2003. We had a set of gigs that weekend in Owensboro… 2 of the funnest days of my life!

Wayne “The Train” Hancock at FooBAR in East Nashville
Wayne Hancock played a very welcomed gig in East Nashville Friday night. Nashville needs a lot more of this guy! Wayne has one of the best honky tonk voices out there and plays with an outstanding western swing band… no drums, just upright bass, tele and steel. Wayne bangs away relentlessly on his Larrivee and would have played and sung all night long without the 1:15 curfew (east nashville or FooBAR rule?). This is real country music and Nashville needs to see a whole lot more of it!

Eric Heatherly played The Listening Room in Nashville and tore the place up! I’ve been lucky enough to work with Eric on his recording of Unforgettable (heard on Gray’s Anatomy) as well as songs from his upcoming album “2 High to Cry,” produced by Carson Chamberlain. This was my first time hearing the live show and it definitely rocked!
Cadillac Sky - Bluegrass Underground Photos - Cumberland Caverns
This was the best Bluegrass Underground to date! Cadillac Sky is an incredible new band on the Skaggs Family Records label. Virtuosic playing is just the beginning… these guys have perhaps the best on stage presence I’ve ever seen in a bluegrass band. Combine that with top notch singing and songwriting and you have a band that will surely forge great paths in the bluegrass world over the upcoming years. This was my second time seeing Cadillac Sky and they blew me away both times.

The Farewell Drifters have such a great sound! I’ve seen them many times and they always sound great. Smooth harmonies and catchy back to basics melodies make their songs instant classics! Clayton is also quite the monster on guitar… no doubt comes from shredding all those metal licks in his early years.
The Silver Jews Final Performance - Bluegrass Underground Radio Show
The final Silver Jews show took place in the Volcano Room of Cumberland Caverns for a radio show titled “Bluegrass Underground.” This was a detour from the Bluegrass Underground format in a number of ways… the obvious being that in absolutely no way is this a bluegrass related band… they were fully plugged in and with drums if you can imagine that! The show went very well and the fans were very appreciative that they get to see the apparent last show of The Silver Jews, a band with an impressive underground following but not much public presence, in such a spectacular venue.
